The consul must leave the territory of Ukraine within the next 72 hours, according to Unian info.
The Consul of Hungary in the town of Berehove, Ukraine's Zakarpattia region, has been declared persona non grata. Hungarian Ambassador to Ukraine Ernő Keskeny was informed about this today, an UNIAN correspondent was told in the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The Ambassador was handed a note stating that, in accordance with Article 23 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, in connection with activities incompatible with the status of a consular officer, the consul of the Hungarian consulate in the town of Berehove must leave the territory of Ukraine within the next 72 hours.
The Foreign Ministry expects the Hungarian side will continue to refrain from any unfriendly steps toward Ukraine, and its officials - from violations of Ukrainian legislation. The Foreign Ministry noted they consider Ukrainian citizens of Hungarian origin as a unifying factor in relations between the two states, and call on Hungarian partners to do the same. Last week, a candid camera video of Ukrainian citizens taking their oaths of Hungarian citizenship at the Hungarian Consulate in Berehove (Beregszász) was uploaded on YouTube. Later, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin threatened that Kyiv would expel the Hungarian Consul.
