Viktor Orbán and European Parliament: conflict escalating

Budapest, September 12, AZERTAC

The Prime Minister of Hungary has made rigid reproaches to the European Parliament, saying said that the criticism of Budapest’s actions which is contained in the report of EP committee on civil liberties, touches honor of his country. “Europe wants to accuse defenders of its own borders”, Viktor Orbán underlined, addressing on Tuesday delegates of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

“Hungary will protect further its borders, to stop illegal migrants and to protect its rights, if necessary as well as from you”, - Hungary’s Premier emphasized.

The vote planned for September 12 in the European Parliament on the report of EP committee on civil liberties became the reason of such severe statement by Orban. The report’s author, deputy Judith Sargentini, has accused Budapest of refusal to follow the European policy in the field of migration, violation of the rights of minorities, for “systematic threat to democracy, norms of the constitutional state and fundamental rights”. Also representatives of some other committees of European Parliament and the First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, have made similar claims to the Hungarian government.

According to dpa Agency, by his statement, Orban has nullified any possibility of settlement of the situation. The author of the report suggests to start a procedure for Article 7/1 of the Contract on the European Union concerning Hungary to prevent threat to fundamental values.
