Azerbaijani Deputy Premier meets UN Special Rapporteur on human rights of IDPs
Baku, May 23 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister, chairman of the State Committee for Refugee and IDP Affairs, chairman of the Republican Commission for International Humanitarian Assistance Ali Hasanov has today met UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons Chaloka Beyani.
Mr. Hasanov noted the importance of Mr. Beyani`s visit to the country, adding it was a good opportunity for him to see the situation.
The Deputy Premier said the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was the only problem of the country.
Mr. Hasanov said: “The only wish of us is the UN Security Council’s ensuring the implementation of its four resolutions on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. We do not have any other wish. But unfounded territorial claims of Armenians are unacceptable.”
The Deputy Premier said the Azerbaijani government had been carrying out great work to ensure the needs of refugees and IDPs in both legal and socio-economic fields.
“All 82 towns built for IDPs in the country meet modern standards.” The Deputy Prime Minister said calculations were being carried out to define the material damage caused by Armenia to Azerbaijan.
“It is more than $300 billion. The Azerbaijani government will demand the payment of the damage as compensation from Armenia some day,” he noted.
Mr. Beyani said his visit aimed to inspect how the Azerbaijani government was solving the problems of refugees and IDPs in the country.
He noted the conflicting parties had to come to peace agreement in order to ensure the return of refugees and IDPs to their homes.
Mr. Beyani stressed the significance of ensuring the fulfillment of the UN resolutions in terms of solving the dispute.
“We attach special importance, in our activities, to the UN’s approach to Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and independence,” he said.
Mr. Beyani hailed what the Azerbaijani government had done to improve the living conditions of refugees and IDPs in the country.
He particularly praised the construction of the new towns for refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan.
“I have never seen the building of such modern towns for refugees in other any place of the world. We welcome the creation of such towns,” he added.
