Ali Asadov, Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, held separate meetings with delegates from the religious leaders of member and observer states of the Organization of Turkic States, the Russian Federation, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, as well as with Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, and Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for the Eastern Churches. These discussions took place on the sidelines of the Global Summit of Religious Leaders, themed “World Religions for a Green Planet,” held in Baku as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

During the meetings, the parties stressed the importance of holding the Global Summit of Religious Leaders and emphasized the significance of enhancing the role of interfaith dialogue, national-cultural values and traditions of multiculturalism in promoting the green agenda, as well as more efficient use of the potential of religions and faith in addressing climate change.

PM Ali Asadov highlighted Azerbaijan's rich cultural and spiritual heritage, noting the country's commitment to fostering interfaith dialogue. He stated that for centuries, representatives of various ethnic groups and religions have coexisted like a family in Azerbaijan.

Ali Asadov provided insight into the exemplary model of relations between the state and religion in Azerbaijan, established by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, stating that this policy continues successfully under President Ilham Aliyev, considering the significant challenges of the modern era. He stated that the head of state has declared multiculturalism to be a fundamental aspect of Azerbaijan's state policy and way of life.

Recalling the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue held in Baku this May, he noted that the event, which is part of the "Baku Process", is considered as a pivotal international platform aimed to explore the intercultural dialogue on a global scale.

Prime Minister Ali Asadov highlighted the numerous places of worship from various religions in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that these sites are protected by the state and undergo regular maintenance or reconstruction. He particularly pointed out the historical and religious monuments in the liberated territories, noting that they had been destroyed and looted by Armenia during the 30-year occupation. Asadov emphasized that 65 out of 67 mosques were completely destroyed.

The PM also provided insights into the ongoing Great Return Program implemented in Karabakh and East Zangezur, mentioning the significant efforts to restore the damaged heritage.

Ali Asadov also stressed that unlike Armenia, which pursued an aggressive policy against the Azerbaijanis during the occupation and devastated the historical, cultural and religious heritage of the people, Azerbaijan shows understanding and tolerance towards other cultures and religions.
