Director General of UN Office of Drugs and Crimes: Crimes against environment affect biodiversity
Baku, November 13, AZERTAC
“The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) is pleased to participate in this COP29 in Azerbaijan this year. Because it is very important to include in the climate agenda the law enforcement angle and the importance of addressing the crimes against environment,” Ghada Waly, Director-General/Executive Director of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV)/ United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), told AZERTAC.
“The crimes against the environment includes deforestation, pollution, any illicit trafficking of wildlife. And all of this affects biodiversity,” the UNODC Director-General said.
“Additionally, pollution of oceans and waterways affects fisheries, and it is very important that we work with member states to raise the awareness of the importance of the law enforcement angle, building the capacity, and providing technical assistance to law enforcement offices. And we are very glad that the Baku-hosted COP29 has been successful in bringing member states together to discuss the mitigation efforts,” she added.
