Bonn, June 21, AZERTAC
The event entitled “From Baku to Belém: Driving Adaptation Ambition from Negotiations to Action” was held as part of the June Climate Meetings (SB62) in Bonn, Germany.
The event, co-organized by the COP29 Presidency and the upcoming COP30 Presidency in partnership with the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions and the UNFCCC, focused on keeping adaptation issues in the spotlight and accelerating activities in this area.
Speaking at the event, COP29 Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev noted that the impacts of climate change are already being seriously felt worldwide and affect countries unequally depending on their level of development. He then highlighted successful outcomes of COP29 on adaptation, emphasizing key achievements: the launch of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap, the establishment of the Baku High-Level Dialogue on Adaptation, and the formal inclusion of adaptation as a standing agenda item. These milestones ensure sustained political attention, institutional continuity, and a structured process towards achieving the Global Goal on Adaptation.
In her remarks, COP29 High-Level Climate Champion Nigar Arpadarai noted that although significant progress has been made in the 10 years since the Paris Agreement, more needs to be done and it is time to move from promises to action. She emphasized that the COP29 Action Agenda aims to accelerate this transition.
The event was also addressed by Olga Pilifosova, Manager of the Adaptation Programme at the UNFCCC Secretariat; Ana Toni, Secretary-General for Climate Change of Brazil and CEO of COP30; Dan Ioschpe, COP30 High-Level Climate Champion; Marcele Oliveira, Youth Climate Champion for COP30, and others.
