Foreign Ministry Representative: “Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action” becomes vital partnership platform on global scale

The “Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action”, established to share solutions and promote concrete actions on climate change and the water crisis, has become a vital partnership platform on a global scale in a short period of time. It was stated by Elchin Allahverdiyev, representative of the Azerbaijan`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, member of the COP29 negotiating team, at a meeting dedicated to the "Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action" initiative of the COP29 Presidency Agenda, held as part of the Bonn Climate Change conference.
"The initiative was officially launched in Baku on November 21, 2024, and considerable progress has been made over the past seven months. The platform has already attracted nearly 100 participants, including 72 countries, and this number is growing rapidly," he added.
Elchin Allahverdiyev emphasized that substantial effort has been made aimed at organization and implementation of the platform in close cooperation with UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The goal is to ensure knowledge exchange and a systematic approach based on solidarity in water and climate sustainability.
Noting that the Roadmap for the implementation phase of the platform was presented, Elchin Allahverdiyev emphasized: “We strive to shape this platform together – for the sake of water, climate sustainability, and the people and ecosystems that depend on it,” Elchin Allahverdiyev. He stressed that the Baku Dialogue on Water is part of the "Peace, Water and Climate" approach of COP29, which aims to enhance partnerships and institutional cooperation to reduce the impact of climate change on water resources, one of the most sensitive areas.
Niklas Hagelberg, Senior Programme Coordinator Climate Action at UN Environment Programme, thanked the Azerbaijani Presidency of COP29 for initiating this initiative and hosting the meeting in Bonn.
Sonja Koeppel, Secretary of the Water Convention, UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), emphasized that the Baku Declaration marked a significant milestone in global cooperation on water and climate. “Partner organizations – UNEP, UNECE, and WMO – are continuing joint work on the mechanisms of action and the Roadmap for dialogue on the way to COP30. The official meeting of the Platform will be held in Berlin at the end of 2025,” she emphasized.
Representatives of the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, and Kazakhstan also addressed the event.
The meeting continued with discussions.
