India takes first step to hosting Olympics and Paralympics, sends Letter of Intent for 2036 edition
Baku, November 5, AZERTAC
The Indian Olympic Association has formally sent Letter of Intent to Future Host Commission, International Olympic Committee, further solidifying the dream to host Olympics in 2036, according to the Economic Times.
The letter was sent on October 1, 2024, expressing India's interest in hosting the Olympics and Paralympics Games in the subcontinent.
In August, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had initiated discussions with the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Future Host Commission (FHC) as the first step towards securing the rights to host the 2036 Summer Games.
Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi time and again has highlighted India's aspiration to host the 2036 Olympics.
However, a problem may emerge for New Delhi as the Indian Olympic Association is in a bit of a turmoil and are currently facing a significant crisis, characterized by internal conflicts within the body.
The power struggle between IOA President PT Usha and the executive board has left athletes in a vulnerable position, as demonstrated by the recent protests from wrestlers who needed intervention from Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to secure their participation in the World Championships.
Meanwhile, in his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the significance of preparing for the 2036 Olympics, affirming that it is a major goal for India. Addressing the nation from the historic venue, the Red Fort, Modi had confirmed that preparations are already underway.
"We are inspired by the achievements of our athletes who have made the Indian flag proud at the Paris Olympics. A large contingent will soon depart for Paris to compete in the Paralympics, and I wish them the very best. Hosting the 2036 Olympics is a dream we are actively working towards," Modi said.
The journey to securing hosting rights for the Olympic Games is a complex and highly scrutinized process overseen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Future Host Commission (FHC).
The IOC meticulously evaluates bids from potential host cities based on a range of criteria, including infrastructure, financial stability, and the ability to deliver a sustainable and memorable Games.
The 2028 Summer Olympics will be hosted by Los Angeles, USA. This marks the third time the city will host the Games, having previously done so in 1932 and 1984.
The 2032 Summer Olympics are set to be held in Brisbane, Australia. This will be Brisbane's first time hosting the marquee Games.
