PM Ali Asadov attends meeting of CIS Council of Heads of Government in Moscow

Moscow, December 12, AZERTAC

A meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) took place in Moscow, Russia, on December 12.

Azerbaijan's Prime Minister, Ali Asadov, attended the event and addressed the participants, congratulating Russia on its successful CIS chairmanship this year and wishing success to Tajikistan as chair in 2025.

In his remarks, Ali Asadov emphasized the significance of the meeting's agenda, which included around 20 items covering various areas of collaboration such as the economy, transport, humanitarian fields, finance, and budget matters. He particularly highlighted the importance of the Priority Action Plan for Humanitarian Cooperation for 2025–2026, set to be approved as an outcome of the meeting.

The Prime Minister noted Azerbaijan's active preparations for major cultural and sporting events within the CIS in 2025.

“We attach great importance to collaboration within the interstate program ‘Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth.’ As decided by the Council of Heads of State on October 8, the city of Lachin in the Republic of Azerbaijan has been declared the Cultural Capital of the Commonwealth for 2025,” said Ali Asadov.

He provided updates on the rapid restoration of Lachin, a liberated city known for its breathtaking nature and centuries-old history. The Prime Minister highlighted ongoing large-scale infrastructure and social projects aimed at revitalizing the city and ensuring economic prosperity.

PM Asadov also discussed the 3rd CIS Games, scheduled for next year in Ganja, which has been declared the Sports Capital of the CIS for 2025. Additionally, he highlighted significant political milestones in Azerbaijan this year.

“For the first time in the history of independent Azerbaijan, following the restoration of the country's territorial integrity, Presidential and Parliamentary elections were held across its entire territory. This marked a historic milestone, enabling former IDPs to cast their votes in polling stations organized in their native lands,” Ali Asadov noted.

The Prime Minister shared the outcomes of the recently concluded COP29 climate conference in Baku, emphasizing key decisions such as the introduction of climate financing for developing countries and the establishment of the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage. “Despite a groundless campaign against Azerbaijan and calls for a boycott, Azerbaijan’s leadership showcased strong political will and professionalism, ensuring the success of the conference and achieving significant progress in multilateral negotiations.”

Ali Asadov expressed gratitude to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and the leaders of CIS member states for their active participation in the COP29 events. He underscored the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue within the CIS framework.

The meeting concluded with the signing of numerous documents by the heads of government of CIS member states.
