Mukhtar Babayev: We must do everything we can, across all pillars of the Paris Agreement, to make COP29 and our actions against climate change a success
Baku, September 3, AZERTAC
“In the last ten years, sea levels have risen more than twice as fast as before. These changes in sea levels are nothing less than an existential risk to small island states,” said Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President-Designate, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources as he addressed the High-Level Dialogue: Advancing Climate Transparency through Universal Participation in the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF).
“Disasters are becoming more frequent and more severe. These developments highlight the urgent need to act on our shared climate goals. That’s why we must do everything we can, across all pillars of the Paris Agreement, to make COP29 and our actions against climate change a success. Transparency is a key part of those efforts, tracking progress and building trust around the global climate goals that we must meet to protect vulnerable communities. Last year, Parties came together and reached the UAE Consensus. As we progress to COP29, we must now build on the positive spirit and momentum generated at COP28 to keep 1.5 within reach,” Mukhtar Babayev underlined.
The COP29 Presidency has shared its plan for a successful year of climate negotiations, to enhance ambition and enable action on climate change, with climate finance as the centrepiece.
“As we ask all Parties to enhance their ambition in the next generation of national climate plans, transparency will be critical,” the minister added.
