To achieve climate-resilient housing and urban infrastructure, construction methods must be changed, says UN-Habitat official

“African cities are emerging as a focal point of climate risks across all subregions of the continent. This makes it necessary to change construction methods to develop climate-resilient housing and urban infrastructure,” said Jane Lumumba, a Programme Management Officer in the Regional Office for Africa at UNHABITAT, in her address at the event titled ‘United for Change Translating Africas Urban Position into Transformative Actions” organized as part of WUF13.
She noted that only about 5% of the population in Africa has access to mortgage loans, while the vast majority are forced to live in informal settlements. She stressed that this is not a matter of choice, but rather a result of the formal housing system’s inability to adequately meet existing demand.
