UNESCO headquarters host plenary session of G-77 and China Group under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship VIDEO

The first plenary meeting of the Group of 77 (G-77) and China Group for 2026 was held at the UNESCO headquarters under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship.
UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany participated in the event as the keynote speaker.
In his remarks, Azerbaijan’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Elman Abdullayev expressed his gratitude to the members of the group for the confidence placed in him.
He emphasized that during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship, the interests of the Global South countries would be high on the UNESCO’s agenda, the Group’s activities would be enriched, as well as coordination among member states would be strengthened.
The Permanent Representative highlighted the importance of strengthening the multilateral system, as well as solidarity and cooperation within the UN, in the background of international and regional challenges, noting that the G-77 and China Group serve as an important platform in the fields of education, science, culture, communication and information, as well as in areas such as the Africa priority, small island developing states and youth.
UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany stated that the initiative put forward within the UNESCO’s 80th anniversary serves to strengthen multilateralism, solidarity, and the organization’s core mandate in the fields of peace, education, science, culture, and communication.
The UNESCO Director-General also emphasized the significance of conducting inclusive and transparent consultations with member states in the reform process.
The plenary session also included the adoption of agenda, as well as discussions on the UNESCO 80 initiative and the Group’s activities.
Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the G-77 and the China Group is yet another manifestation of the country’s growing role within international organizations, particularly UNESCO, and its contribution to global dialogue and solidarity.
