The Azerbaijan State News Agency - (AZERTAC) is a major news and information agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the sole source of official government news.

Founded by the Government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on March 1, 1920, AZERTAC operated under various names during the Soviet period.

After Azerbaijan regained its independence, the development of AZERTAC became closely associated with National Leader Heydar Aliyev. In June 1996, he issued a decree to improve AZERTAC’s operations, followed by an order in January 2000 to further enhance the agency’s activities.

In the modern era, AZERTAC has continued to receive government support. On February 26, 2015, President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree renaming the Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency (AzerTAc) as the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC). On November 24, 2016, AZERTAC, with the legal status of a "state body," was reorganized into a public legal entity named the Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC). In December 2017, its statute as a public legal entity was officially approved.

Along with official government information, AZERTAC provides round-the-clock news in Azerbaijani, English, Russian, French, German, Arabic, Chinese, and Spanish, covering all spheres of life in Azerbaijan, including politics, economy, culture, sports, health, environment, and more. As a member of over ten international and regional organizations and information platforms, with correspondent offices in more than 20 countries, AZERTAC has significantly expanded its global reach. The agency has signed cooperation agreements with news agencies in over 50 countries and engages in information exchanges with agencies across five continents.

AZERTAC operates a dedicated video portal and a Children’s Knowledge Portal. In addition to photo and written content, it produces multilingual video reports on Azerbaijan’s social, political, economic, and sports developments, distributed through its online platforms and social media. The agency also spearheads projects such as “Azerbaijan’s Talents,” “If I Were a Tourist,” and “Rare Exhibits of Azerbaijan’s Museums,” while actively developing new initiatives.
