Shamakhi, October 29, AZERTAC
The latest feature in AZERTAC’s “If I Were a Tourist” column highlights the Mausoleum of Shahkhandan in Shamakhi.
This time, our journey takes us to a city renowned for its ancient history and rich literary heritage. The mausoleum of Shahkhandan, brother of the great Azerbaijani poet Imadaddin Nasimi, stands in a historic cemetery alongside the Baku–Shamakhi–Yevlakh highway.
For visitors to Shamakhi, the site is more than an architectural monument. It is a sacred place that preserves the family legacy of a prominent Azerbaijani poet and the spiritual memory of generations. Every year, thousands of visitors from Azerbaijan and abroad come to explore the monument, learn about the country’s rich past, and pay tribute to its cultural heritage.
Among the medieval monuments of material culture, the Mausoleum of Shahkhandan stands out for its architectural design and historical significance. Built in an octagonal shape, it is crowned with a conical dome. The monument has a single entrance and stands approximately eight metres tall. With its simple yet majestic design, the mausoleum has preserved the craftsmanship traditions of its era and the historic character of the city.
Born in Shamakhi in 1369, Imadaddin Nasimi was one of the foremost thinkers of the Eastern Renaissance. Forced to leave his homeland amid the social, political, and religious turmoil of his time, he was executed and buried in Aleppo in 1417.
His brother Shahkhandan, meanwhile, lived in Shamakhi throughout his life. According to historical sources, he also wrote poetry under the pen name “Shahi Khandan.” The mausoleum is therefore not merely a tomb, but also an important monument commemorating the Nasimi family’s legacy and Shamakhi’s Renaissance heritage.
Shahkhandan Cemetery is also the final resting place of Seyid Azim Shirvani, a prominent 19th-century Azerbaijani poet and a leading figure in Enlightenment literature. Historical sources confirm that he was buried there in accordance with his last wishes.
The Mausoleum of Shahkhandan has undergone restoration and conservation with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
