6 PKK terrorists surrender in southeastern Turkey
Baku, January 9, AZERTAC
At least six PKK terrorists have surrendered to Turkish security forces in the southeastern provinces of Sirnak and Hakkari, Anadolu Agency reports.
Five of the terrorists fled PKK camps in northern Iraq and surrendered in Sirnak's Silopi district on Sunday, according to a statement from the Turkish General Staff.
The sixth terrorist surrendered in Hakkari's Yuksekova district on Monday, the governor's office said in a statement.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the U.S. and EU. In its terror campaign against Turkey, which has lasted for more than three decades, over 40,000 people have been killed.
Since the group resumed its armed campaign in July 2015, more than 1,200 people, including security forces personnel and civilians, have lost their lives.
The group has its main base at Mt. Qandil, near the Iraq-Iran border, and uses northern Iraq's mountainous border region to launch attacks on Turkey.
