From Peter Cosgrove, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia

His Excellency Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan

Dear Mr. President,

On the occasion of the anniversary of the Republic Day of Azerbaijan, I wish to convey to the Government and people of Azerbaijan my best wishes, together with those of the Australian Government and people.

The relationship between Azerbaijan and Australia continues to strengthen through increased people-to-people links and political, economic and trade ties. I would like to thank you for the warm welcome recently provided to an Australian parliamentary delegation which visited Azerbaijan to observe your parliamentary elections.

The Australian Government firmly believes that global challenges, including terrorism, climate change, international development and disarmament require broad-based global solution. Australia has been pleased to work with Azerbaijan through the United Nations, and remains committed to continuing the close cooperation between our two countries.

It is in this context that Australia would welcome Azerbaijan`s support for its candidacy for the Human Rights Council for the term 2018-2020. Australia`s candidacy is a measure of our longstanding commitment to promoting and protecting human rights. Australia is actively involved in the Council. This is the first time we have sought membership.

May I express my confidence that the friendly relations existing between our two countries will continue to prosper in the coming year.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Cosgrove

Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia
