A peacemaker statesman

A peacemaker statesman

Baku, August 20, AZERTAC

Since coming to power, the President of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev, has always talked about peace and emphasized that peace and stability must be the foundation for the prosperity in the Caucasus. His long-standing vision came true on August 8, 2025, when a historic peace agreement was signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House, brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement is a very significant step after many years of conflict because it not only reaffirms Azerbaijan’s control over its land but also a symbol of His Excellency Ilham Aliyev’s steadfast commitment to peace.

The journey to this milestone was not simple, it is the dedication of His Excellency that made it happen. The second Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020 was a decisive turning point when Azerbaijan regained sovereignty over Karabakh after years of occupation. Since then many agreements have been signed between the two countries, but Armenia has repeatedly breached them and is now disseminating misinformation among European Union countries to discredit Azerbaijan. It has also launched a negative campaign against Azerbaijan but throughout these challenges, His Excellency, Ilham Aliyev displayed remarkable restraint and never got provoked by these propagandas. He remained calmed and focused. His persistence reflects not only tactical patience, but a deeper statesmanlike commitment to ensuring a prosperous and stable future for his people.

In past, Aliyev presented the idea of the Middle Corridor but Armenia strongly opposed it. Now he is presenting the idea of the Zangezur Corridor that will connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan region through Armenia, while respecting Armenian sovereignty. This corridor is not just a transit route but a gateway to increased trade, energy flows, development, connectivity, and cultural exchange across the South Caucasus. It will also bring benefits not only to Azerbaijan but to all countries of the region by linking Europe and Asia more closely.

Aliyev’s foresight in championing corridors of connectivity; first the Middle Corridor and now Zangezur, highlights his role not only as a national leader but a regional visionary.

Furthermore, His Excellency’s diplomat persona cannot be denied and it is as important as his achievements. Even with Armenia’s opposition and ongoing hostility, he has always presented peace not as giving in to Armenia, but as an opportunity for both nations. He has shown peace, stayed calm against misinformation, and clearly focused on building a better future. Though some issues still remain, the August 2025 deal is the true testament of President Aliyev’s ability to turn conflict into dialogue and rivalry into cooperation. It also shows his dedication towards regional peace and development.

Since becoming President, Ilham Aliyev has always focused on using diplomacy to resolve regional conflicts and has achieved notable diplomatic successes especially in strengthening country’s international standing and regional influence. Under his leadership, Azerbaijan has established strong bilateral ties with neighboring countries, as well as major global powers. When it comes to diplomatic achievements, His Excellency Ilham Aliyev’s efforts are undeniable.

In November 2020, he brokered a Trilateral Ceasefire Agreement with Russia and Armenia, secured Azerbaijan’s gains and opened the door to regional cooperation. He advanced initiative like Southern Gas Corridor, a major energy project, and played pivotal role in its completion and development, ensuring Azerbaijan’s role as a key supplier of natural gas to Europe. Moreover, he hosted major international events such as the Baku Humanitarian Forum and the Global Baku Forum, portraying Azerbaijan as a hub for intercultural dialogue.

Other diplomatic achievements such as trilateral partnership with Turkey and Pakistan, holding Non Aligned Movement Chairmanship, working on transport and trade corridors to promote regional connectivity and trade, and various other successes have solidified Azerbaijan’s position as a key regional actor under Aliyev’s leadership.

In short, President Ilham Aliyev has proven himself to be a true peacemaker statesman. His commitment to peace, trade, and connectivity goes beyond Azerbaijan and covers whole Caucasus region. This agreement clearly highlights his leadership and vision, showing how a determined leader can shape the future of an entire region.
