APEC security detail: 21,000 cops

Baku, November 2 (AZERTAC). Some 21,000 police officers will be on guard at and around the venue of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit in Yokohama, roughly the same number as were deployed for the 2008 Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido, National Police Agency officials said Tuesday.

Around 7,000 police officers in Kanagawa Prefecture and 14,000 from other prefectures will be mobilized for the security of the regional forum`s ministerial and leaders` meetings to be held Nov. 10-14 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention complex facing Yokohama port.

Given that the venue is close to high-rise condominiums and shopping and business complexes, it will be difficult to guard VIPs and security measures will inevitably affect the daily lives of local citizens, the officials said.

The agency will set up a special security office Nov. 8 to further enhance preparedness.

In a meeting earlier Tuesday, officials from the agency, the Kanagawa police and the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed their security measures ahead of the APEC meetings.
