Azerbaijan introduces International Technical Assistance Program for Small Island Developing States

On September 23, Azerbaijan introduced the International Technical Assistance Program for the Small Island Developing States (SIDS), on the margins of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Addressing the event organized by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry titled “From island heritage to the World heritage: Azerbaijan’s International Technical Assistance Program for Small Island Developing States (SIDS),” Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister, the importance of international cooperation and capacity-building to protect the cultural and natural heritage of SIDS amid growing climate and environmental threats.
He announced Azerbaijan’s commitment to providing annual technical assistance to three SIDS in preparing their Tentative Lists for UNESCO World Heritage nomination.
The foreign ministers of Guinea-Bissau and Palau, along with a senior representative of the Dominican Republic, expressed their gratitude to Azerbaijan for including their countries in the program’s first pilot phase.
Other speakers included the ministers of Grenada, the Maldives and the Bahamas, as well as representatives of Germany, Türkiye, and Russia.
The meeting also discussed practical aspects of implementing the program.
Over 80 local specialists from 39 island states are expected to be trained under the program.
