AZERBAIJAN SEEKS EXPANDING COOPERATION WITH CE
During the conversation, Mr. Seyidov noted in particular that Azerbaijan is very interested in expanding links with the Council of Europe, and that after becoming a full member of the organization, the country has taken a number of important steps. These steps were not bound up with the fulfillment of the COE requirements, but with adherence of Azerbaijan itself to the democratic values, he said. The Committee Chairman especially emphasized that existence of several problems creates serious obstacles for development of both Azerbaijan and Europe as a whole, and in this connection, expressed serious concern over the fact that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict continuing because of agrresive policy of Armenia, the COE member ignoring the international legal norms, has not yet been solved. We highly appreciate the documents adopted by the Council of Europe in the matter, and still hope that our conflict-related cooperation will be continued in future, he concluded.
Director of the Council of Europe’s Strategic Planning Department Jean Louis Laurens noted in response that the Council of Europe intends to steady develop its cooperation with Azerbaijan, and that the aim of his visit to Baku is to discuss a number of questions including the mentioned one. He advised that the organization had made a decision on developing Council of Europe-Azerbaijan-European Commission cooperation, and stressed the important role of parliament in this process to make it more effective. According to Mr. Laurens, Azerbaijan should pass improve a number of important laws, and approve some international agreements and conventions.
Chief of the Milli Majlis Administration Safa Mirzoyev present at the meeting has updated the guest in detail on the Parliament’s lawmaking plans.
The meeting participants have also discussed a number of other issues of mutual interest.
