AZERBAIJAN TO SECURE $39.1M LOAN FROM ADB

The Asian Development Bank said Tuesday it expects to lend about $39.1 million to Azerbaijan over the next two years.

The money for 2005 and 2006 will be used primarily to help the country's internally displaced people, the Manila-based agency said. About 575,000 people are displaced and they are one of the poorest and most disadvantaged groups in Azerbaijan, the agency added.

Malnutrition, high infant mortality, and lack of adequate services, water, and sanitation are serious problems facing the (internally displaced) population, said Marco Gatti, an ADB senior country programs specialist.

Azerbaijan joined the ADB in 1999.
