AZERBAIJAN-US-NATO RELATIONS EXPANDING
On July 10, Deputy Chairman of Milli Majlis Ziyafat Asgarov met in the Parliament with the adviser for economic issues of the US Embassy to Azerbaijan Ms. Lora Khrubi.Greeting the guest, Mr. Asgarov noted that after September 11 events, Azerbaijan became one of the fists states of world to combat against terrorism. Azerbaijan itself has suffered from terror and understands the gravity of this problem, the Deputy Chairman stated. Armenia, pursuing an aggressive policy against Azerbaijan and occupying 20% of Azerbaijani lands, raised terrorism to the level of state policy. The US, combating against international terrorism and NATO should keep in focus this fact.Mr. Asgarov especially stressed Azerbaijan’s intention to join NATO and expressed his hope for assistance of the US government and NATO leadership to Azerbaijan. Highly appreciating the role of Azerbaijan in the antiterrorist coalition, Mrs. Lora Khrubi noted that the US keeps in touch with the issue and considers Azerbaijan its strategic partner. The US welcomes Azerbaijan’s participation in the NATO programs, as well as activity of Azerbaijani militaries in the staff of NATO peacemaking forces. The US government also highly appreciated decision of the Milli Majlis of the Republic on participation of the Azerbaijani military contingent in peacemaking operations in Iraq.Then, the sides exchanged of views on other issues of mutual interest.
