Baku 2015 Ambassador Jade Jones starts the year with Euro club gold
Baku, February 15, AZERTAC
It was quite a week for London 2012 Taekwondo gold medallist Jade Jones. After being named as a Baku 2015 European Games Athlete Ambassador, she claimed a gold medal at the 3rd European Club Championship in Antalya, according to www.baku2015.com.
The 21-year-old Jones beat Croatia’s Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Martina Zubcic 11-3 in the 57kg final for one of three titles for GB Taekwondo. London 2012 bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad and 2014 European champion Bianca Walkden won gold in the men’s 80kg and women’s 73kg weight classes respectively.
It was Jones’ first bout since beating Spain’s Eva Calvo Gomez in the WTF World Grand Prix series final in Mexico last December.
"The first couple of rounds I was really nervous, probably because I haven’t really fought for a while," Jones told the Daily Post newspaper. "Sometimes it’s hard to get up for the smaller competitions."
"My aim is to do less competitions this year so I have got to try and nail the ones I’m involved in."
After competing at the 2015 WTF World Championships in May, Jones will be taking part in the Baku 2015 European Games, for which she has been named an Athlete Ambassador.
"It’s great to think I will be one of the faces for the Games," said Jones, who became Great Britain’s first-ever Taekwondo Olympic gold medallist at London 2012.
"It’s a brilliant honour for me but also for the sport. It just shows the profile is getting higher and higher."
