BP launches mentorship programme for university students

BP Azerbaijan has announced its new mentorship programme for Azerbaijan to support the career development of undergraduate (the 4th year) university students and graduates majoring in technical studies. The programme aims to provide one-to-one mentorship to selected students to help them prepare for future career opportunities in petro-technical disciplines. All mentors are BP experts who will volunteer to work with a large group of students representing various universities in Baku.
The mentorship programme will focus on developing mainly such business required skills as communications, presentation, resume development, networking and others. It will be based on six-month activities which will include monthly face-to-face meetings with mentors, as well as master classes at BP’s offices in Baku.
Narmina Nabiyeva, BP’s Vice-President of Human Resources for the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey region, said: “We are excited to start this new initiative in support of university students’ development in Azerbaijan. We believe this will be an excellent opportunity for them to build some very important soft skills so much required in today’s business environment. I am confident BP mentors will be able to provide professional support to the selected students in their career journey helping them understand their development needs and prepare them for the world of work.
“All BP employees who have volunteered to be mentors are very enthusiastic about this opportunity. They look forward to meeting their mentees to share their knowledge about BP’s business in Azerbaijan and how it feels to work for a global company.”
At this stage, the programme is planned to have two streams, with the first group of students starting in November, 2019 and the second in January, 2020.
Overall, the programme will cover 119 students and graduates from the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, Baku Engineering University, Khazar University, Baku Higher Oil School and the Azerbaijani-French University.
The participants in the programme are majoring in such disciplines as Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Oil and Gas Engineering, Civil Engineering, Energetics, Geological exploration/Geophysics, Power Engineering, Process Automation, Recycling and Resource Recovery, Environmental Engineering, Information Technologies.
All participants have been selected through online application followed by a task for them to record a video to describe why they wanted to join the programme.
