Cheese Could Help Prevent Diabetes, New Study Reveals
Baku, July 26 (AZERTAC). A new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reveals that eating two slices of cheese per day could help prevent diabetes.
Diabetes, an illness typically known to occur in overweight individuals, affects millions of people worldwide. The link between obesity and diabetes has always been strong, which is why some individuals are having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that eating high-fat foods like cheese can actually help decrease the chances of developing the illness.
However, the study conducted by British and Dutch researchers analyzed the diets of 16,800 healthy adults and 12,400 patients with Type 2 diabetes. The individuals were selected from 8 European counties. The findings of the study revealed that patients who ate at least 55g of cheese a day (the equivalent of 2 slices) were 12 percent less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes. Interestingly enough, the same findings were revealed when patients consumed 55g of yogurt per day. No other dairy product yielded the same results.
Why would cheese and yogurt, which are both high in fat, help decrease the chance of Type 2 diabetes?
Researchers suspect that the probiotic bacteria found in cheese and yogurt lower cholesterol while producing certain vitamins which prevent diabetes. Both foods are high in vitamin D, magnesium and calcium which could also help fight the illness.
