CIS experts agree draft document on Chernobyl accident

The CIS Executive Committee in Minsk has hosted a meeting of the expert group to finalize a draft agreement of the CIS heads of state on the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident and the relevant draft decisions, AZERTAC learnt from the press service of the Minsk headquarters of CIS.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Armenia and the CIS Executive Committee. The experts reviewed the comments and additions and agreed on a draft document, which will further be submitted to the Council of Ministers.
The document calls on the international community to continue cooperation in the elimination of man-made disasters, using well-established forms of cooperation, implementation of targeted programs, projects and initiatives aimed at the development of the affected regions.
The April 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. It was a direct consequence of Cold War isolation and the resulting lack of any safety culture.
