CONFERENCE ON POVERTY REDUCTION HELD

The annual conference on the results of implementation of the “State Program on Poverty Reduction and Economic Development” has taken place at the “Hyatt Regency-Nakhchivan”, AzerTAj correspondent reported. Opening the conference, Minister of Economic Development Farhad Aliyev noted that most world countries encountered the poverty-related problems. Today, the daily income of almost the half of the world’s population is less than US $2, and 6 of 100 newborn infants die not reaching the age of one. To settle such problems, 70 world countries including CIS transition countries take steps to reduce poverty.

Mr. F. Aliyev also told of specific ways to solve poverty problems. In Azerbaijan, however, according to him, due to Heydar Aliyev’s successful policy the poverty was reduced by 4,3 percent. The Minister stressed that the primary intent of socio-economic development strategy pursued by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is to reduce poverty and dramatically improve living standards of the population.

F. Aliyev appraised the assistance of foreign countries’ embassies, especially embassy of Japan, international organizations and financial institutions assisting in tackling existing problems in Azerbaijan

UN resident-coordinator Marco Borsotti, chief of the Asian Development Bank office Mohammad Tusnim, ambassador of Japan to Azerbaijan Toshiyuki Fujiwara and others told of the existing problems concerning the poverty reduction in Azerbaijan and ways to solve them.

In conclusion, Minister of Economic Development F. Aliyev stated that all the proposals and remarks would be taken into account.
