CONSTRUCTION OF BTE GAS PIPELINE TO START ON SCHEDULE

Construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (BTE) will start on schedule, SOCAR President Natig Aliyev told journalists. He said this to calm rumors that the start of construction of the gas pipeline was going to be postponed. He said that in May 2004, construction work on the pipeline was to begin in Azerbaijan with work starting in Georgia a month or two later. Turkey planned to construct the small section of that pipeline in December next year.

Mr. Aliyev reaffirmed that the first gas from Shahdeniz would reach Turkey in September 2006.

The BTE gas pipeline is 690 km long with 442 km in Azerbaijan and 248 km in Georgia. This project is estimated at USD0.9 billion.
