COP29: A platform for a safe, inclusive, and sustainable future

Baku, October 15, AZERTAC

“This year, the world will gather in Baku at the UN Climate Conference, COP29, to discuss the global action agenda on climate change.

COP29 will be a decisive event for mobilizing the international community and making critical decisions. With 80 percent of the world’s population affected by climate change, this essential platform in Baku will explore solutions to address these issues. The primary focus at COP29 will be climate finance, with a new quantitative target expected to be established. Azerbaijan aims to propose new approaches and innovative solutions at both national and global levels. As the host of COP29, Azerbaijan has put forward fourteen key initiatives. Inclusivity is a major principle of COP29's presidency. One of the host country’s main goals is to prioritize inclusivity to ensure fair and equitable decision-making. Azerbaijan, in its role as the COP29 Presidency, is fully committed to promoting inclusivity throughout the process,” Nigar Mammadova, Member of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, told AZERTAC.

“The COP29 agenda is clearly defined, emphasizing specific goals, objectives, and results. It is notable that 44 representatives from NGOs in 22 countries, who attended the "Summit of the Future" at the UN headquarters in New York from September 20-24, endorsed the COP29 presidency's commitment to promoting diversity, inclusivity, and gender equality, while also advocating for climate justice.

Climate change impacts everyone, but in my opinion, its effects are particularly severe on local communities, vulnerable populations, and developing nations. Thus, it is essential to amplify the voices of these groups and involve them actively in shaping the outcomes. Furthermore, COP29 should bring global attention to countries whose natural resources have been exploited and who suffer from neocolonialism. The participation of small island developing states in COP29 is welcomed by both these countries and the international community, as it strengthens inclusivity. President Ilham Aliyev has stated that Azerbaijan will do everything possible to act as a bridge between developed and developing countries, striving for consensus at COP29. It is now more important than ever to view the fight against climate change as a shared responsibility, a moral duty, and an indispensable opportunity for sustainable development,” she emphasized.

“Today, the world views COP29 as a platform that upholds the rights of all people, helps protect our planet for future generations, and contributes to a sustainable future. One of COP29's key messages is that all of humanity must set aside political differences. The COP29 presidency has officially launched its flagship initiative — the Call for Ceasefire. All parties, regardless of political challenges, have been urged to unite and observe a ceasefire during the one-month duration of COP29. The destruction of ecosystems and environmental pollution due to conflicts exacerbate the consequences of climate change and hinder efforts to preserve the planet.

COP29 will also serve as a symbol of human solidarity, going down in history as a platform for a safer, more prosperous, and sustainable future for all. Only by prioritizing peace and climate action can we safeguard our planet for future generations.

Azerbaijan is a country of free initiatives, and COP29 is the most effective platform for discussing climate change issues. The politicization of this event is unacceptable.

The President of Azerbaijan is a principled, decisive, and just leader. Countries and political leaders not aligned with Azerbaijan at COP29 are not acting in support of peace, solidarity, justice, and the preservation of the planet,” Mammadova added.
