Over the past few days, local media has reported on discharge of Academician Eldar Salayev. In this connection, Prosecutor General of the Azerbaijan Republic Zakir Garalov told AzerTAj correspondent that investigation of the criminal case launched under the articles covering violent seizure of power in the Azerbaijan Republic, preparation of mass riots, abuse of office, and embezzlement has proved that the funds gathered to these ends at the instruction of Rasul Gouliyev from ex-Health Minister Ali Insanov and ex-President of the State Company “Azerkimya” Fikret Sadygov were handed over to former President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Eldar Salayev, and that the latter together with abovementioned persons took part in secret meetings to discuss preparation for coup d’etat in Azerbaijan, Rasul Guliyev’s return to the country and related organizational and financial issues. As a result, in accordance with the Baku Nasimi district Court’s decision, Eldar Salayev was taken, 29 October 2005, into custody under the articles 28.220.2 (preparation of mass riots) and 278 (violent seizure of power) of the Criminal Code of the Azerbaijan Republic.
In his address to President of the Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev, Eldar Salayev asked his contributions to development of science in Azerbaijan, open-hearted confession and the need to be under constant doctor’s control be taken into account, and the preventive punishment against him be changed.
The Prosecutor General said that as Eldar Yunis Salayev partly pleaded his guilty helping with unmasking other accused persons including Ali Insanoov and Akif Muradverdiyev, and his health conditions worsened, the issue has been revised, and the Nasimi district Court ruled on 16 November 2005 in favor of release of Eldar Salayev from custody.
