EVALUATION CONFERENCE ON PENAL SYSTEM REFORMS HELD
In his opening remarks, the Minister of Justice of Azerbaijan Fikrat Mammadov said that democratic reforms in the country cover all spheres of life, with particular emphasis on human rights protection, improvement of judicial system and effectiveness of justice.
He noted the reforms have been implemented despite the continuing Armenia’s military aggression against Azerbaijan, as 20% of the country’s territory is occupied, and a million of its citizens are refugees and internally displaced.
The Minister dwelt on the work to improve the penal system highly praising the cooperation with related international organizations, in particular, the effectiveness of the joint Program supported by the Council of Europe and European Commission.
Representative of international organizations as well as foreign and local experts, speaking to the audience, underlined that the large-scale legal reforms in Azerbaijan have already yielded positive results, and expressed readiness to continue cooperation to further improve the country’s legislation.
