First General Assembly of Global South NGO Platform adopts final declaration

The inaugural General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform has adopted its final declaration. The document was presented by the platform’s Secretary-General, Fuad Karimli.
The declaration emphasizes that the establishment of the Global South NGO Platform reflects a shared historical necessity and growing global solidarity. It highlights Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and cooperation within COP29 as key foundations that contributed to the creation of a global network bringing together more than 1,000 delegates from over 120 countries.
The document further notes that, in order to more effectively safeguard the common interests of the Global South, governance mechanisms will be strengthened, regional representation expanded, the role of the Secretariat enhanced, and specialized working groups established. To ensure regional balance, the Secretary-General will be supported by four regional deputies.
According to the declaration, the General Assembly will convene annually in the country hosting the headquarters. The Secretariat has also been tasked with expanding digital cooperation, enhancing knowledge exchange, exploring donor partnerships, and developing joint grant initiatives.
Among the key priorities outlined in the document are the organization of international forums, engagement of youth and emerging civil society leaders, strengthening institutional memory, and submitting joint documents to international organizations.
