FLASH FLOODS HIT INDONESIAN VILLAGE, 25 MISSING
Baku, September 15 (AZERTAC). Rescue officials say 25 people are missing after flash floods hit a central Indonesia village. Hundreds more were forced out of inundated homes.
Health Ministry Crisis Center chief Rustam Pakaya said the heavy rain washed through the mountainous Madina district of North Sumatra on Tuesday. The missing was believed to have been swept away by the strong current.
Emergency supplies were to be delivered to around 200 families sheltering at government offices and other buildings in the area, some 780 miles (1,250 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Jakarta.
Seasonal downpours cause annual flash flooding in Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 17,000 islands where millions of people live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.
