French senator: Azerbaijan is the best model of secularism for the West
Paris, May 27, AZERTAC
“Although Azerbaijan is a small country, it can truly be considered as the best example to many countries, particularly in terms of secularism,” head of France-Caucasus Friendship Group in the Senate of France, senator Alain Houpert has told AZERTAC in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of a conference marking the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in Paris.
He emphasized that freedom of religion is maintained in Azerbaijan. Houpert said neither the state, nor religion interfere in the affairs of each other in Azerbaijan, describing it as a crucial factor for a secular country.
“This principle of secularism is being gradually eroded in the West, especially in France. For example, some communities of France try to follow their own rules and regulations rather than state laws. One should benefit from the principle of secularism of Azerbaijan,” the French senator said.
“One of the major assets of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was giving suffrage to women, which made Azerbaijan the first Muslim nation to grant women equal political rights with men. Inspired by Azerbaijan`s move, General de Gaulle granted suffrage to women in France.”
The senator also hailed Azerbaijan`s law on gender equality, describing it as exemplary.
