“Garbage mountain” collapses in Philippines, leaving one dead, dozens missing

A garbage landslide struck a landfill in Cebu city, the Philippines on January 8, leaving at least one worker dead and dozens still missing, according to PNA.
According to the initial incident report from the Cebu city Operations Centre, the incident occurred at around 16:33. Rescue teams have worked through the night at the scene in an effort to locate and rescue those trapped under the debris.
Philippine authorities have yet to determine the exact number of victims. Police confirmed that one female worker was killed, seven people were injured, and 27 others remain missing. Meanwhile, Cebu’s Mayor Nestor Archival said that 12 people had been rescued, while the number of those still unaccounted for could be as high as 38.
Archival said rapid response forces have been mobilised to support search and rescue efforts and pledged full assistance to the victims’ families.
The waste management facility employs a total of 110 workers. On January 9, city authorities and the facility’s management are expected to convene an emergency meeting to address the aftermath of the incident and assess the extent of the damage
