The Georgian Centre for the Conservation of Wildlife has won a contract from BTC Co and the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) to implement a project for the monitoring and conservation of the Caucasian Black Grouse. Under the $3 million BTC and SCP Environmental Investment Programme in Georgia, the Caucasian Black Grouse was selected as a priority because the pipeline route crosses a known habitat area and little is known about this endangered species. The project's scope includes ecological and population studies and the development of a species management plan, within a budget of $250,000. Unocal supports school construction in Goranboy

Unocal, a BTC Co shareholder, is investing $15,000 in a school construction project in Eyvazlilar, a community in the Goranboy District in Azerbaijan. Eyvazlilar lies close to the BTC pipeline route and currently has no school building. For schooling, children have to go to the neighboring village which 2.5 km far away.

The project is an addition to the community investment programme (CIP) for the BTC and South Caucasus Pipeline projects and will be completed in April. Members of the village are contributing labour, construction material and equipment to the project, which they identified themselves as a priority need for the community. Save the Children, one of the implementing partners for the CIP in Azerbaijan, are helping the community to implement the project.
