Jovanovski survives scare
Baku, July 21 (AZERTAC). There was drama on the first day of the Baku Cup as 2012 champion and number five seed Bojana Jovanovski came perilously close to elimination as she began her attempt to regain her crown.
The Serbian eventually came through 2-6 7-5 6-3 against Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria in a match that lasted exactly two hours, after her opponent had served for the match and come within two points of victory at 5-4 in the second set. Jovanovski closed out the match by winning the last four games.
One seed did fall, but perhaps that wasn’t too much of a surprise because the winner was 2013 finalist Shahar Peer. She defeated sixth seed Yvonne Meusburger 6-2 6-4.
The qualifying rounds were completed, and those making it through to the main draw are Kateryna Bondarenko (Ukraine), Vesna Dolonc (Serbia), Nigina Abduraimova (Uzbekistan), Olga Savchuk (Ukraine), Misa Eguchi (Japan) and Danka Kovinic (Montenegro).
