Machu Picchu no longer endangered – UNESCO

Baku, June 23 (AZERTAC). Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, will be excluded form the UNESCO list of endangered world heritage sites as of February 2012 but conservation efforts will continue.

The decision was passed by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during its session in Paris.

Machu Picchu was founded by the Inca Emperor Pachacuti around AD 1440. After the Spanish conquest in 1530s, all of the city`s residents mysteriously disappeared. For nearly 4 centuries, Machu Picchu was unknown to the outside world until an American historian, Hiram Bingham, rediscovered it in 1911.

30 years ago, it became a UNESCO world heritage site and in 2007 was voted by Internet users among the Seven New Wonders of the World.
