Nishinoshima grows 2 years after eruption

Japan Coast Guard officials say a remote Pacific island has grown 12 times in size since it was formed by an underwater eruption 2 years ago.

The officials on Tuesday conducted aerial monitoring of Nishinoshima Island. It's in the Ogasawara chain, located about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo.

The officials said explosive eruptions were taking place from a crater in the island's center. They also observed lava flows.

The island measured 1,900 meters east to west and 1,950 meters north to south. It covered an area of 2.64 square kilometers.
