OMBUDSMEN SHOULD SUPPORT PEACE ON WORLD
Warmly greeting the guests, Murtuz Alaskarov said that significant works have been done in protection of human rights in the country under the nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev. Capital punishment was eliminated, the Constitution was amended and the citizens were given right to appeal the Constitution Court, a number of other laws and codes were adopted. In compliance with the obligations Azerbaijan took on it, some international Conventions were ratified by the Milli Majlis of the Republic. Establishment of the Ombudsman institution is the result of those reforms.
Noting special role of Ombudsman in the defense of human rights, Chairman of the Milli Majlis said that joint arrangements of the Ombudsmen play an important role not only in human rights protection, but also in the development of cooperation among the countries. This institution should overcome every obstacle to reach its goals. The international ombudsman institutions should pay particular attention to ensuring of the human rights and freedoms over the world, including in Azerbaijan. As the result of the Armenian aggression, 20 percent of the Azerbaijani lands have been occupied, and over one million of people were ousted from their homes and became refugees and IDPs, and live in hard conditions. Azerbaijan adheres peaceful settlement of this conflict, however, the aggressive Armenia impedes it, ignoring the UN Security Council’s resolutions on the issue. By the authorities invested in them, the ombudsmen should seriously react the question. They must be supporters of peace on the world.”
