PRESS CONFERENCE OF CENTRAL ELECTION COMMISSION
Having mentioned that executive orders “On Improvement of Election Practice in the Republic of Azerbaijan” of May 11, 2005 and “On Urgent Measures in connection with Preparation and Conduct of the Elections to Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan” show President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev’s political will to conduct free, democratic and transparent elections M. Panahov added that these documents had been positively assessed not only in Azerbaijan but also in the world. According to him, the CEC has successfully completed the part of its work with no problems occurred during registration of candidates and pre-election campaign. Thus, the candidates effectively used the airtime allocated in the Public TV and AzTV to bring their pre-election platforms to voters’ notice.
Mr. Panahov noted that 1541 candidates would be competing in 5137 polling stations for 125 parliamentary seats. The number of voters makes up some 4660000. In accordance with the legislation, the issued ballots exceed the number of voters by 3 percent. The elections will be observed by 1586 international observers representing some countries, international organizations, international NGOs and diplomatic corps accredited in Azerbaijan. The coverage of the elections will be provided by some 300 foreign journalists.
According to CEC chairman, there would be some novelties in the elections. These are finger-inking and exit-polls.
M. Panahov responded to journalists’ questions regarding the conduct of elections, announcement of voting results, voting in Khankendi Constituency #122 and others.
