The Press Service of the Office of Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan has made a statement to the effect that some media outlets, abusing the freedom of the press and roughly violating the Law “On Mass Media”, publish articles and collages which humiliate national dignity and religious feelings, and may cause tension in relations with neighboring countries.

According to the statement, the Office of Baku Public Prosecutor has investigated the appeals from resident of Sumgait G. Hajiyeva and others, for punishment of those responsible for the collages insulting national dignity and religious feelings of religious and state officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and published in the newspapers “News Fact” (4th edition, 1 June 2006,) and “Gun” (17th edition, June 2, 2006). As a result, the prosecutors opened the criminal case in accordance with articles 308.1 (Abuse of office) and 283.1 (Creating ethnic, racial and religious hostility), and continues investigation, whose results will be made public.

The Office of Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan has stated that abuse of freedom of the press by creating ethnic and religious hostility is inadmissible and contrary to national interests of Azerbaijan. “Such actions will be decisively suppressed, and responsible persons will be punished in accordance with relevant provisions of the law,” the statement says.
