RADIATION SECURITY OF CASPIAN REGION ON AGENDA OF INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
Radiation security issues in the Caspian region have been discussed at the international workshop, recently held in the National arboretum in Mardakan. This vital issue was discussed under NATO’s aegis considering the features of the Caspian region. The workshop was attended by representatives of over 15 countries - USA, Austria, Turkey, Croatia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Georgia etc.
Representatives stated about the radiation security problems, which are of regional and world significance. Over 50 reports were heard. Results of the discussions will be studied by such international organizations as IAEA, UN and NATO.
According to director of the Institute of Radiation Problem under National Academy of Sciences Adil Garibov, the general radioactive background in the Caspian Sea is normal but radionuclid showings tend to increase. He pointed out to development of nuclear technologies in some eastern countries, inflow of polluted waters from Russia, productive activity in Caspian countries, including oil producing, chemical and mining sectors as factors promoting the increase.
