’’ROUND TABLE’’ ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN`S DAY
On March 5, United Nations Department of Public Information together with a female group ’’Coalition 1325’’ held a ’’round table’’ devoted to the International Women`s Day - 8 March.
Chairman of the ’’Coalition 1325’’ Sajida Abdulvahabova talked about a role of women in Azerbaijan`s political life, social and economic development. She said that Azerbaijan in 1995, before the Peking conference of women, ratified the Convention of the United Nations on Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and incurred a number of obligations.
Madam Envera Selimovic, Department of Public Information representative in United Nations Azerbaijan Office emphasized value of the International Women`s Day. She said a suppression of violence over women is one of the basic questions disturbing the United Nations, and this year the International Women`s Day is devoted to theme on ’’to put an end to impunity for violence over women and girls’’. The UNO official added that the violence over women and girls remains an unresolved problem in the countries and cultures. This problem strikes a destructive blow to a life of women, to their families and all public.
Speakers - Ganira Pashayeva, member of the parliament commission for the international relations and inter-parliamentary ties, member of the Committee for human rights and law in Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe, Safagat Gahramanova, vice-president of the State committee on problems of family, women and children, Elmira Suleymanova, Commissioner of Human Rights of the Azerbaijan Republic, Tamam Jafarova, member of Central Election Commission and others talked about the work carried out in Azerbaijan for protection of women`s rights, gender problems, noted importance of perfection of the legislation in this sphere, educational measures among women in the remote regions of the republic.
