Spain tests world`s first hybrid high speed train

Baku, September 22 (AZERTAC). Galicia has witnessed the first test run of a hybrid high speed train anywhere in the world.

The new Alvia S-730 trains can reach 250km/h on high speed tracks, and can be propelled by electricity or diesel on conventional tracks at speeds of 220 and 180 km/hr respectively. They can also run on both Spanish and international gauge tracks.

Development Minister, José Blanco, accompanied by the Government delegate, Miguel Cortizo, the Chairmen of RENFE and the rail infrastructure company ADIF, along with other local dignitaries, made the first test run of the train on Wednesday, between Santiago and Ourense. The journey took 50 minutes as the train reached a maximum speed of 203 km/h in diesel mode, while the current train takes two hours ten minutes.

The hybrid train will start regular services between Madrid and Galicia in the second half of 2012.

Seven trains are currently under conversion, but the total fleet will be 15 trains, at a cost of 74 million €. The trains are manufactured by the Spanish company Talgo, and the British company Bombardier.
