Two thousand years old Maya complex discovered

Baku, September 1 (AZERTAC). Archaeologists in southern Mexico discovered a 2000 year old Mayan building complex. It`s probably a big palace from which a major Mayan area was controlled.

The complex was found in the archaeological area Plan de Ayutla, in the state of Chiapas. According to the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) it was built between 50 BC and 50 AD.

Luis Alberto Martos, who is in charge of the excavations, said the complex consists of rooms with walls one meter thick and a lot of rounded corners. According to archaeologists, the discovery is of great importance to find out about the Mayan culture and architecture.

The Mayan empire stretched out over parts of Central America and Mexico. Their civilization began about 1000 BC and lasted until 900 AD. The Mayans were highly developed particularly in the fields of astronomy, mathematics and architecture. They had an accurate and complex calendar. They also had a fully developed writing.

The opening of the Mayan complex for the public wil be in 2012, archaeologist hope.
