UN OBSERVER MISSION IN GEORGIA EXTENDED
According to the information received by AzerTAj, the United Nations Security Council voted to extend its observer mission to Georgia until the end of January 2005. The Security Council said peace talks between Georgia and its separatist Abkhazia region are at a near standstill. The Council called on both sides to overcome their mutual distrust and "spare no effort" to revive the peace process.
It has to be reminded that Abkhazia declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s, leading to a war that killed thousands and forced 300-thousand civilians to flee.
The United Nations observers have been monitoring a Russian-brokered cease-fire since 1993.
