US researching `battlefield illusions` to confuse enemy
Baku, February 17 (AZERTAC). The US military is to invest $3.7 million into researching "Battlefield Illusion" technology to confuse enemies on the front line.
The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) said the “advanced human-deceptive technologies” could be mounted on to military vehicles, jets and ships, Wired reports.
The Battlefield Illusion project - revealed in a new military budget - hopes to discover how to manage enemy “sensory perception”.
Researchers will study how humans use their brains to process sensory inputs and develop “auditory and visual” hallucinations that will “provide tactical advantage for our forces,” Wired said.
Battlefield Illusion is part of a bigger DARPA program looking for ways to jam laser-based communications and sensor systems.
Last year defense contractor BAE Systems created an "invisibility cloak" that allows a vehicle to blend into its surroundings.
The system - which works over infra-red and other frequencies - uses on-board cameras to pick up the background scenery and display that infra-red image on the vehicle.
