WB BOOSTS CASPIAN FISH RESERVES
A fish-farming plant with an estimated capacity 15 million sturgeon fries is expected to start operations in Neftchala region of Azerbaijan in August. According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the building of the Plant is being carried out as on the project ‘Urgent Ecological Investments’ financed by the World Bank, which had allocated $9 million to this end. Experts promise the new plant will allow increasing the sturgeon reserves in the Caspian for the showings of fries’ survival in fish-farming plants considerably exceed those in natural habitat. Before, three fish-farming plants with total capacity 12 million fries per year and specializing in breeding of sturgeon and beluga functioned at Kur River and its delta. Two of them, however, stopped operating because of Caspian level rise.
