Wikipedia celebrates 10 years
Baku, January 12 (AZERTAC). The Wikipedia and its users are planning over 300 events on six continents to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the free online encyclopedia that has become famous for spreading access to information through a model in which all can be publishers.
To help users organize the celebrations, it was developed ten.wikipedia.org page with new events every day. Is also online “Wikipedia timeline”, a page to commemorate major events in the history of the service. Officially, the anniversary is next Saturday, January 15.
In a decade, the Wikipedia changed the way we access information online and create online content that are shared. This is how the site’s articles appear often on top of Google searches.
The site, led by entrepreneur Jimmy Wales, has no advertising and remains in the air with donations from the public. Only in 2010 they reached the figure of 16 million dollars.
Naturally, the online encyclopedia has courted controversy throughout its history. Although the goal is to let anyone edit the articles, polemics pages are subject to various levels of protection that restrict users from editing. Moreover, the pages are also protected to prevent vandalism and so called “edit wars“.
Other criticisms are focused on the fragility of the site, including vandalism and false information, though an academic paper showing acts of vandalism are usually of short duration. A study in the journal Nature has concluded that the scientific articles on the site are near the level of accuracy of Encyclopedia Britannica and had virtually the same rate of “serious errors”.
The festivities commemorating the tenth anniversary will be conducted in person and online.
